Welcome to the IPBA's Dispute Resolution and Arbitration Committee page!
IPBA Dispute Resolution & Arbitration Committee Mailing List
One of the ideas discussed at the Committee Meeting in Hong Kong was to introduce a mailing list, which committee members could subscribe to. The current forum function on the IPBA website only allows messages sent by the chairs to the members and no direct communication between the members. Michael Cartier has spent time working on this and has created a new mailing list which will allow members to send emails to the email address firstname.lastname@example.org which will then be forwarded to all members who have subscribed.
The mailing list is intended for topics that have at least a tenuous connection to the committee, e.g. a short note on any legal developments, asking a quick question to the community, looking for a lawyer in specific jurisdiction or simply inquiring which committee members will also be attending an upcoming conference. To avoid flooding one’s email inbox, the default setting has been set to “digest mode”. This means that subscribers will at most receive a single email per day collating all the emails sent to the list. So feel free to send emails to the mailing list.
Subscribing is as simple as visiting the website http://ipba.arbitration.asia/ you will find a link that will lead to subscription page (direct link: http://ipba.arbitration.asia/mailman/listinfo/list_ipba.arbitration.asia):
- fill in your email address;
- click subscribe!
Should you have any problems signing up, send a short email to Michael (email@example.com) who set up the list and will able to help.
We hope that the mailing list will further strengthen the ties between committee members and look forward to reading your posts to the list.
I am sure you will all join Mohan and I in thanking Michael for undertaking this initiative which will benefit us all.

With over 500 members representing 47 jurisdictions, the IPBA's Dispute Resolution and Arbitration Committee is a true worldwide network of practitioners involved in all aspects of dispute resolution. The Dispute Resolution and Arbitration Committee attracts the most members and is very popular amongst the IPBA members. The Committee allows diverse individuals, be they practitioners of arbitration or dispute resolution or interested individuals from the commercial world, to expand their knowledge and interaction with this ever-expanding and exciting field of law.
The Committee seeks to foster active dialogue among the IPBA membership not only at the annual IPBA conferences, but also to provide an ongoing informative forum for arbitration and alternative dispute resolution developments and topical issues.
Dispute Resolution and Arbitration Basics
When disputes arise, a court battle can be a costly, prolonged, and a public affair. In the case of international disputes, enforceability in other jurisdictions is also an issue. In this global economy, arbitration provides commercial entities a useful alternative to litigation. However, in some situations, litigation may be appropriate and more efficacious.
The committee embraces dialogue in all forms of dispute resolution, including litigation, negotiation, mediation, conciliation, expert determination, adjudication, arbitration, and online dispute resolution. These methods can be applied singly or in combination to address disputes.
