It's Halloween! This may not mean anything in your country, but it is being celebrated in more places each year. In Japan, where the Secretariat is located, young and old alike enjoy dressing up in costume for parties, concerts, and parades.
We don't mean to scare you, but there are only two more months left of the year. No, your calendar is not playing tricks on you. Why not treat yourself to an IPBA event this year? IPBA Membership News

The IPBA Secretariat will soon be sending out membership renewal reminders by e-mail and by post to those whose membership expires at the end of this year. Be sure to pay your dues by December 31st in order to continue your IPBA membership into 2018!

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on March 16, 2018, at the Annual Conference in Manila. All IPBA members are encouraged to attend. At the AGM, the Officers discuss activities of the IPBA since the last annual conference as well as financial matters of the association including the previous year's audit and budget for the upcoming year. The members take part by ratifying the nominations for Officers and other Council positions. This is also a chance to stand up and be heard by the Officers: feel free to ask any questions, and express your views! An official announcement of the AGM will be sent by e-mail to all members in December.

IPBA Committee News
IPBA committees are busy preparing panel topics for the Manila Annual Conference and finding speakers. Your committee leaders would love to hear suggestions from you, and please also let them know if you would like to be a speaker! Program Coordinator Jose Cochingyan is furiously gathering plans from committee chairs to put together more than 50 sessions. Details of the conference program will be announced as they are firmed up.
Find out more information about the committees HERE. All IPBA members can join up to three of the IPBA committees. If you're new to IPBA, becoming active on a committee is a great way to network among lawyers with similar interests and practice areas. You can connect with other members of your committees of interest through the Committee Forum feature of the IPBA web site, too. This feature can be found in the Member Only section.
Nominations for committee leadership for terms starting from after the Manila conference are now closed. If you are interested in becoming a Chair/Co-Chair or Vice-Chair of any committee from 2019, contact the current chair or the new chair after March 16, 2018.

IPBA Leadership Activities

IPBA President Denis McNamara and President-Elect Perry Pe traveled to Sydney in October and attended the IPBA Networking Event hosted by the College of Law on October 10th. Wine, wine, and more wine was served, ensuring a lively evening for more than 100 participants.

IPBA and the College of Law will soon be announcing an exciting collaboration, so stay tuned!

President-Elect Perry Pe will soon begin his world tour to promote the Annual Meeting and Conference in Manila. One of his first visits will be to Tokyo and Osaka at the end of November.
All Officers and other Council Members will gather at the IPBA Mid-Year Council Meeting in London, November 10-13. They will be discussing the business of the association, with reports tp be made at the Annual General Meeting in Manila in 2018.

Even if you missed taking advantage of the Super Early Bird registration fee, you can still catch the current Early Bird registration fee until January 31, 2018.

The IPBA Scholarship Committee is currently reviewing over 30 applications to the IPBA Scholarship Program. It will be no easy task to decide who to bring to Manila! Chosen Scholars will be announced by the end of the year.

Investment in the Emerging Markets - the APEC Perspective
This is the first-ever IPBA event to be held in Vietnam. speakers will evaluate prospects and analyze the current issues related to trade and investment cooperation in the APEC region, discuss developments in outbound investment from major APEC economies to emerging markets, compare pros and cons on arbitration and dispute settlement in different arbitration forums, and more.

Forces of Change: Modernisation and a Shifting International Landscape (English and Asian Perspectives on How Legal Systems Adapt)
The central focus will be on highlighting important and relevant developments in litigation and arbitration, discussing lessons on modernisation that legal systems in the UK and the Inter-Pacific Region can learn from each other, and the impact that political change is having on the international landscape. This will include a fascinating discussion relating to China's Belt & Road initiative.

3rd IPBA East Asia Forum
This year's Forum will be discussing issues among Compliance, Government Investigation, and more, including development and implementation of effective regulatory compliance and enforecement programs to successfully defend and handle government investigation; cross-border investigation and responding strategy; and handling bribery and corruption in international arbitrations.
