The first half of 2017 was busy for the IPBA, and there is no slowing down in the second half. Our Officers and other Council Members are working behind the scenes, committed to support the association through discussions and initiatives for the betterment of the IPBA. We will keep you informed of the results of their activities as they solidify.
There are only 256 days to go until the start of the IPBA Annual Meeting and Conference in Manila! We will continue to send you udpated information as it becomes available. Registration is already open on the official conference web site, and a preliminary schedule can be found there as well. Make your plans early! |

IPBA Membership News

The printed version of the IPBA Membership Directory is being prepared right this very moment! If there are any changes to your contact information, please update your profile via the IPBA web site Member Only section, or let the Secretariat know right away. Please note that only those with valid membership between April 1, 2016 and March 31, 2017 will be included in this edition.

You need your IPBA Membership Number to take advantage of the discounted registration fees for the IPBA Annual Conference and other IPBA events. You can find your Membership Number next to your photo in your profile on the IPBA web site. Enter your e-mail address and password to enter the Member Only section, and go to "My Profile". While there, be sure to upload your photo if you have not already done so! You can also contact the IPBA Secretariat if you have any questions.

IPBA Scholarship Program 2018
The IPBA Scholarship Committee is taking applications for Scholars to attend the Annual Meeting and Conference in Manila 2018!
There are two categories of Scholarship:
-
Lawyers from Developing Countries: lawyers from Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Mongolia, Bangladesh, and the Pacific Islands.
-
Young Lawyers: lawyers aged 35 and under from any jurisdiction.
Chosen Scholars will receive roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations during the Conference, a 3-Year Term IPBA Membership, and a conference fee waiver.
Click on the images at right for the full description and application form. This program is open to any qualified lawyer who fit the application requirements, so please pass this information on to your collegues or anyone who may be interested. You can also apply even if you are currently a member of the IPBA.
For the Auckland Conference there were seven Scholars chosen from over 60 applicants, and we'd like to see that many applicants for Manila, too!

IPBA Leadership Activities
IPBA President Denis McNamara is getting ready for a busy few months. He will be attending several events upon the invitation of other legal organizations. His first trip will be to Sri Lanka to attend the POLA Conference in July, accompanied by two prominent IPBA members in Sri Lanka. POLA (Presidents of Law Associations in Asia) brings together leaders from associations within Asia to exchange ideas and information, collaborate on issues of mutual interest, and to promote friendship. Denis will also travel to Japan for the LAWASIA Conference, and to the US for the ABA Conference, so please be sure to greet him if you see him during his travels.
IPBA President-Elect Perry Pe will be visiting several jurisdictions to promote the Annual Meeting and Conference in Manila. So far, he's scheduled for London, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, South Korea, and Japan. He looks forward to meeting with as many IPBA members as possible!

On 15 June 2017, Jonathan Warne, the IPBA Jurisdictional Council Member for the UK, hosted a summer drinks event for local members of the IPBA and the British-Japanese Law Association (the “BJLA”), bringing together over 40 lawyers from both organisations.
The BJLA is an international, bilateral group supported by the Law Society of England and Wales. It is based in London and open to members of the legal profession in the UK, Japanese lawyers residing in the UK and to employees of Japanese companies situated in the UK who are involved in the procurement of legal services. Law professors, researchers and students are also welcome.
The event, organised via the BJLA’s Co-Chairs Scott Hopkins of Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP and Professor Chizu Nakajima of BPP Law School, was a great success with many BJLA members expressing an interest in joining the IPBA and attending November’s Mid-Year Regional Conference.

The Nominating Committee (IPBA President from two years past; Immediate Past President; President; and Secretary-General) have begun discussing candidates to take leadership positions in the IPBA beginning from immediately after the AGM in Manila. They will make their final decisions during September, and the nominees will be announced to all IPBA members in the Notice of Annual General Meeting that will be sent to you in December. If you are interested in being an IPBA leader, drop a line to the IPBA Secretariat and we will make sure that it gets to the Committee.

IPBA Committee News
Did you know that, in addition to posting legal updates relevant to your committee here, there are many ways to share updates directly with fellow IPBA Committee members? First, the Committee Forum on the IPBA website is a great way to post a message to members of the IPBA Committee that you have chosen to be a part of. You can find this feature in the Member Only section of the IPBA web site. Second, multiple IPBA Committees maintain an email list or listserv for Committee members. Please contact the appropriate Committee Chair to learn whether your committee has set up this resource and how to use it. Contact information for all can be found on the IPBA web site.
Also contact the Committee Chairs if you are interested in being a speaker at any of the IPBA events. Planning is under way for the committee sessions at the Annual Meeting and Conference in Manila, so now's your chance to put in your expression of interest to be a speaker there.

Registration is open for the Conference! Go to the official conference web site and you can find the registration information HERE. You need your IPBA membership Number to take advantage of the discounted rate. You can find your number next to your profile photo in the Member Only section of the IPBA web site. The Super Early Bird rate ends September 30th.
The conference schedule is a bit different than past years, taking place over three days instead of four. However, the same number of activities and committee sessions will be held in a condensed manner. The shorter time frame is to give delegates less time away from the office, and since the conference ends on a Friday, it will allow delegates to enjoy a full two days on Saturday and Sunday exploring the beauty and excitement of the Philippines!
