Dear [[first_name]] [[last_name]] Esq.,

Greetings from the IPBA!

During the month of November, a similiar holiday is celebrated in two countries at around the same time: "Labor Thanksgiving Day" is celebrated in Japan on November 23rd, while "Thanksgiving" is celebrated in the US on the fourth Thursday of the month. Both thanksgivings used to be festivals to celebrate the harvest, but now Japan's national holiday is to honor those who work, and the holiday in the US is to give thanks for what you have. The IPBA is thankful for many things: a healthy financial status, an annual conference that gets better every year, a growing reputation among international and local law-related associations, and most of all, we are very thankful for each of our members! Without our members, we would not have such a great association.

The timing of these holidays also signals the start of the year-end celebration season. The last few weeks of the year are always hectic: work gets busier as everyone wants tasks completed by the end of the year; invitations to social events increase; and planning begins on the following year's goals. The IPBA is making plans on a variety of projects and initiatives that will come to fruition in 2017. We will inform you as they unfold. It is sure to be an exciting year ahead!

IPBA Membership News

  • An IPBA Special General Meeting was held by teleconference call on November 18th. We would like to thank all who attended for taking the time to join the call. The purpose of the call was to approve the audited financial report for 2015, in accordance with Singapore law after IPBA's incorporation there in 2015. You can view the official Minutes on the IPBA web site, Member Only section, in the Library room.
  • The IPBA currently has 1616 members! We would like to keep ALL of you, so please be sure to pay your dues for 2017! If your membership expires in 2016, you will soon receive an e-mail membership renewal reminder with details on how to renew. Those members who are still OK for 2017 will receive a confirmation of membership status.
  • Even if you registered for the conference while a member in 2016, your membership must be valid in 2017 in order to take advantage of the cheaper Member Only annual conference registration rate!

Who are you?

You need to refer your client to a lawyer in another jurisdiction. You go through business cards you received at the annual conference and find a potential hit! You recognize the name, but can't quite place the face. Is that the right person? You check the IPBA online Membership Directory for the person's profile. Oh, no! There is no a photo! Well, on to the next card . . .

Don't be that person who misses a business reference opportunity! The advantage of having your photo on your Member Profile can not be underestimated. Uploading it is as easy as adding an attachment to an e-mail! Or, send your photo to the IPBA Secretariat and we can do it for you.

IPBA Committee News

  • Basic information for the committee programs at the IPBA Annual Meeting and Conference in Auckland, April 6-9, 2017, has been uploaded to the conference web site. Some details are still being worked out, and will be posted as soon as possible. There are over 50 concurrent sessions planned over two and a half days.
  • If you're in the Dispute Resolution and Arbitration Committee, be sure to submit your entry for the 2nd edition of the IPBA Arbitration Directory to the project coordinator, Eckart Brödermann. Contact the IPBA Secretariat if you have any questions.

The IPBA Secretariat staff is available Monday through Friday, 9:00AM to 6:00PM Japan time. We will be away from the office for year-end holidays from December 28th through January 3rd, returning to the office on January 4th.
