Annual Conference

Vancouver 2014

The IPBA 24th Annual General Meeting & Conference in Vancouver, Canada, took place May 8-11, 2014. Almost 700 delegates and accompanying persons enjoyed the receptions, plenary sessions, educational committee sessions, and social events throughout the conference.

Were you there? We'd love to publish your favorite photos, too! Please send them to the IPBA Secretariat. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the photos below.

The IPBA Council met at the Vancouver Club in the days before the conference, discussing matters of the association to benefit all members of the IPBA.

Who comprises the leadership of the IPBA? The Nominating Committee, the Strategic Long-Term Planning Committee, Officers (above), Membership Leaders (JCMs, At-Large Council Members, and Regional Coordinators), and Committee Chairs; add in the Immediate Past President and you have your IPBA Council. See the Leadership pages of this web site for names and contact information of all leaders.

What do hockey players, a Canadian Mountie, and a Scottish bagpipe band have in common? They all entertained the delegates at the Welcome Reception!

The dropping of the puck between Team Young-Moo Shin and Team Bill Scott signals the official opening of the conference. No fights broke out, thanks to the good referee skills of Huen Wong.

You're under arrest! The Canadian Mounties always get their man, er, woman . . . Secretary-General Yap Wai Ming and IPBA Employment & Immigration Law Vice-Chair Jacqueline Bart are happily captured.

Past Secretary-General Alan Fujimoto, Ellen Stuart (lovely wife of US JCM Ken Stuart), Yoko Fujimoto (lovely wife of Alan), and past IPBA President John Craig enjoy the festivities.

The conference welcomed delegates from all over the world. The IPBA is truly international association, with great camaraderie among the members.

The Plenary Session had two panels of leaders in various fields, discussing sustainability.

The IPBA and LAWASIA signed an MoU for enhanced mutual cooperation.

Japan Night (left) and Young Lawyers Night (above) are two of the most popular extracurricular events of every conference.

The Best Paper Prize was held at the conference, with an overall winner and a "Best Legal Analysis" paper chosen from among the entries.

Shown here is the overall winner, Sebastian Ko of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, Hong Kong. Sebastian is also an IPBA Scholar 2014.

Shown here is the Best Legal Analysis Winner, Sun Zhiquan of Beijing Liangbe Law Firm, Beijing.

A traditional Canadian pancake breakfast was lovingly prepared by (L-R) IPBA President Dr. Young-Moo Shin, President-Elect Bill Scott, and Vice President Huen Wong.

The jingling of Bill's spurs could be heard throughout the hall as the three gentlemen served up their griddle treats to a room full of delegates. In addition to pancakes, there was bacon and sausage galore.
