It has been a busy month for the IPBA since the last edition of this newsletter!

This year's Mid-Year Council Meeting and Regional Conferences took place in Brazil, the first time in 10 years that the council has met in South America, and only the second time it has done so (last time was the Mid-Year Council Meeting 2004 in Santiago, Chile). The events were hosted by Shin Jae Kim, At-Large Council Member for Latin America, and Ronaldo Veirano, Chair of the International Trade Committee (pictured at right) and the generous sponsorship of their firmsTozziniFreire Avogados and Veirano Avogados, as well as BKBG. We thank them for all of their support!

Decisions made at this meeting include the following:

  1. The Council agreed to set aside CA$50,000 from the surplus of the Annual Meeting and Conference in Vancouver for the IPBA Scholarship Program. This will supplement the Japan Fund that is used to support the Scholars now.
  2. Nominees for Officer and Council positions were approved by the Council.
  3. The Constitution Review Committee was reinstated with new members, in order to bring it in sync with real practices as the Associations grows and changes.
  4. A Steering Committee to make Guidelines for Arbitration Privilege was officially approved, with JCM for Singapore Francis Xavier at the lead.

More details of these and other decisions, as well as more photos, can be found on the IPBA web site.

The two Regional Conferences were held, one in São Paulo and one in Rio, focussing on "Global Inclusion of Latin America". At each session, two different panels of experts from around the world discussed Cross-Border Investments, M&A, Securities Markets, Cartels, Anti-corruption, and Arbitration. Keynote speakers were the Honorable Luciano Almeida, President of invest São Paulo, and the Law Minister, Ms. Ellen Gracie Northfleet (Rio).

The next Mid-Year Council Meeting and Regional Conference will be held in Dubai, UAE, next October. Watch for more details on this in the coming months!

New Committee Name

From "Technology & Communications" to "TMT": avid visitors to the IPBA web site will have noticed that the Technology & Communications Committee has been renamed the Technology, Media and Telecommunications Committee to better reflect the industry sector in which its committee members are active. Adding "media" to the technology & communications mix is a natural fit. In media, content may be king, but it nonetheless needs to reach consumers, which is where both technology and communication play a major role. Speaking of content, the TMT Committee is planning a session on the film industry in Asia at the IPBA Annual General Meeting and Conference 2015 in Hong Kong, and hopes to see you there.
