29th IPBA Annual Meeting and Conference in Shanghai
IPBA Events 2019 • IPBA-Supported Events 2019

Dear [[first_name]] [[last_name]] Esq.,

T-minus 26 days and counting until the end of 2019!

The number of IPBA activities has eclipsed that of past years: we lifted off in January with the Mid-East Regional Forum in Dubai, and have been riding a rocket fueled by our enthusiastic and committed members who have planned so many great events. Faster than the speed of light we reached the Annual Conference in Singapore, then orbited the globe with events in Madrid, Chicago, Montreal, Paris, Myanmar, Milan, Osaka, and Beijing. Infinite thanks to those who helped plan these events. You will never know how much you matter to us!

For the past few years, the IPBA has faced stagnant membership numbers; it was a dark matter. The solution to attracting more members was nebulous. This year, though, our member numbers are at an astronomical level: more than 1700! Surely the friendly and welcoming atmosphere of the association is one reason for more people gravitating toward the IPBA, and we welcome everyone into the IPBA universe.

Between conferences, it might seem as though the IPBA leaders drop into a black hole. However, we assure you that they are piloting action on many issues behind the scenes. The Nominating Committee members are reviewing bright stars for future leadership; a Constitution Reform Committee is taking a look at some changes as the IPBA enters a new epoch; The Scholarship Committee is reviewing the mass of applications with great speed and energy to select Scholars for the Annual Conference in Shanghai 2020; and the committee leaders are busy firming up their speakers for the expanding number of substantive concurrent sessions.

As the year winds down we anticipate a soft landing to 2019, and a big bang start to 2020!

We wish you a holiday season filled with family, friends, happiness, love, health, and good fortune.

The IPBA Secretariat will be closed:
Saturday, December 28, 2019 through Sunday, January 5, 2020

We look forward wit working with you again from:
Monday, January 6, 2020

IPBA Membership News

  • Membership renewal season is upon us! You will soon receive an invoice in the mail if your membership is due to expire on December 31st. E-mail reminders will also be sent out in the coming weeks.
  • IPBA membership has grown by almost 40% in the past year! We now have more than 1700 members, the highest since at least 2005. Help us keep to this healthy number by renewing your membership in 2020!
  • It is important to keep your membership up to date if you want to take advantage of the lower registration rate for the Annual Meeting and Conference in Shanghai! You need your Membership Number to register, and you can find that next to your photo in your Member Profile.

IPBA Leadership Activities

IPBA President-Elect Jack Li has been busy again! He recently attended the IPBA 5th Arbitration Day in Osaka, Japan, and met with the 120 delegates who traveled there from around the world. He will come back to Japan the first week of January to speak at a meeting of Japan members, then fly off right after that to Kuala Lumpur to represent the IPBA at the Malaysian Bar's Opening of the Legal Year.

IPBA member Riccardo Cajola attended the UIA Congress in Luxembourg on behalf of the IPBA. He had the opportunity to introduce the IPBA to the President, President-Elect, Board of Governors, and general members at their General Assembly. He is committed to representing the IPBA at future events, and you can be sure that we will be hearing more from him in the years to come.

UNCITRAL Working Sessions

As an "observer member" of UNCITRAL (United Nations Commission on International Trade Law), the IPBA is allowed to send from one to five representatives to UNCITRAL Working Sessions throughout the year, which are held in Vienna or New York City. Until now, selected IPBA members have attended the Working Sessions, becoming regular attendees. We are now opening this opportunity to attend. to all IPBA members.

The next Working Group is as follows:

Working Group III: Investor-State Dispute Settlement Reform
January 20-24, 2020
Vienna International Center, Vienna, Austria

This session will allow one or two maximum IPBA representatives. Please contact the IPBA Secretariat by Monday, January 6th, if you are interested to attend. Attendance will be based on the order in which the intent is received.

IPBA and the IAWJ

IPBA Past President Susan Glazebrook (1998-1999), has more titles than we know how to correctly use. In addition to being Dame Susan Glazebrook, she is also Hon Susan Glazebrook as a Judge on the New Zealand Supreme Court. In addition to these, she is currently the President-Elect of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) and will become its President next year. Just like the IPBA, the IAWJ was established in 1991.

Recognizing the importance of this demographic in the legal world, the IPBA has committed to providing funds to allow two female judges from the Asia-Pacific Region to attend the IAWJ 15th International Biennial Conference to be held in New Zealand May 7-10, 2020.

We will update you when the Scholarship recipients are chosen!
