Dear [[first_name]] [[last_name]] Esq.,
Deepest apologies for sending out this issue one day later than planned! We debated as to whether we should send this out on a Saturday, but we know how hardworking our members are and anticipate that some of you will be checking mails. Read this as a break from your serious cases!
So, here goes!
This is literally being written "on the fly", as we are traveling home from the AIJA Congress that is just ending in Brussels (read about it below in the "Leadership Activities" section). This was the first time for a member of the Secretariat to be invited to another association's conference, so thank you, AIJA! It was a whirlwind of activity, but a fantastic opportunity to promote the IPBA as well as meet many exciting young lawyers from around the world, see how another organization runs its conference, and get to know better our counterparts at other legal associations who were also in attendance. All legal associations have something to offer its members in terms of substantive conference programs, networking opportunities, and resource material, and an online presence. Indeed, many of our members belong to those associations as well. There was no sense of competition at all among all the association leaders, and we are confident that through our strengthened ties we can become better associations and contribute to the growth of lawyers around the world.

November 5th is organized by the IPBA, while November 6th is an arbitration conference held in conjunction with the Thailand Arbitration Commission (THAC). See more details on the IPBA web site. |

IPBA Leadership Activities
Regional Coordinator for Australasia and Southwestern Pacific Islands Neil Russ and Past President Jim FitzSimons attended the POLA Conference (Presidents of Law Associations in Asia) in Canberra, Australia the first week of August. Neil notes that, "We consider that attendance at POLA is highly desirable for IPBA, because it assists with networking, provides us with a profile alongside "peer" organisations, and provides IPBA with a significant opportunity to promote the IPBA to under-represented jurisdictions. The IPBA also gets the opportunity to promote its annual conference." The IPBA, as well as other like international legal associations, attends as an "Observer", meaning that it does not hold a vote, but is welcome as an attendee. The IPBA plans to continue attending this conference.

President Perry Pe attended the ABA Annual Conference in Chicago August 2-4, where he ran into many IPBA members and colleagues from other associations.
Pictued below are Perry with, left to right: New Zealand law Society President Kathryn Beck; Immediate Past President of German Bar Prof Dr Wolfgang Ewer; IPBA Past President Jerry Libby; Law Society of England and Wales President Christina Blacklaws.

Today, Perry is attending the final day at the AIJA Congress in Brussels representing the IPBA. Rhonda Lundin of the IPBA Secretariat gave a presentation promoting the IPBA to members at the Pre-Congress Seminar on "What do you Need to be an International Lawyer?". Thank you so much to AIJA Association Manager Giuseppe Marletta for inviting the ABA SIL, IBA, UIA, and the IPBA to introduce our associations to AIJA delegates. Other IPBA leaders were also in attendance in Brussels, including IPBA Membership Committee Chair Tatsu Nakayama, Publications Committee Chair John Wilson, and TMC Committee Chair Barunesh Chandra; we also ran into several active members of the IPBA. AIJA and IPBA share the same spirit and philosophy, and our associations work together well. We also deepened our ties with other bar associations around the world, so watch for more collaborative efforts that will help you expand your networks, give you more opportunities to attend conferences, and access legal information useful to your practice.
