Golden Greetings from the IPBA!

This week marks a series of national holidays in Japan known collectively as "Golden Week":
Sunday, April 29: Showa Day (observed on Monday, April 30)
Thursday, May 3: Constitution Day
Friday, May 4: Greenery Day
Saturday, May 5: Children's Day
Government and private offices, banks, and some small shops are closed on those days, but larger retail establishments are open as usual. After Golden Week there are no national holidays until July, so people take advantage of this long break to travel both domestically and overseas, with trains, planes, and buses sold out or over capacity; hotels are booked months in advance; and highways come to a standstill, with traffic jams of up to 40 kilometers!

"Koi nobiri", or "carp streamers", decorate parks and rivers all across Japan in celebration of Children's Day.
|
The IPBA Annual Meeting and Conference used to be held during Golden Week to help the Japanese delegates avoid having to take too much time off from work. Nowadays, the conference is held as early as February and as late as May, in order to take advantage of comfortable weather conditions in the venue city, and to take into account everyone's busy travel schedules for attend other association events. Our next Annual Conference in Singapore will be held April 25-27, 2019. See more details below.

IPBA Committee News
In late May, the IPBA Nominating Committee will start their deliberations for Council positions for terms starting in 2019. This includes nominations for Committee Chairs/Co-Chairs and Vice-Chairs. Although Vice-Chairs are not Council members, they fall under the same nomination policies as Chairs/Co-Chairs.
If you would like to be part of the IPBA committee leadership, be sure to contact the Chair/Co-Chair of the committee in which you are interested. The current committee leadership can be found on the IPBA web site.

The IPBA Scholarship Committee is now taking applications for the Scholarship Program for Singapore 2019!
There are two categories of Scholarship:
1. Young Lawyers
Lawyers in good standing aged 35 and under at the time of application.
2. Lawyers from Developing Countries
Lawyers from Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Mongolia, Bangladesh, or the Pacific Islands.

The deadline for Scholarship applications is October 31, 2018. Please pass on the application to anyone interested!

IPBA Leadership Activities
Vice-President Jack Li attended the opening ceremony for the Japan International Dispute Resolution Center (JIDRC) in Osaka on April 26th. He reports that there were around 200 delegates, and the conference was a success. After that, he traveled with his colleague to Tokyo to for dinner with the Membership Committee Chair, Tatsu Nakayama and a lawyer from his firm, and the IPBA Secretariat.
President Perry Pe has a busy year lined up already, with planned attendance to the ABA Annual Meeting July 27-August 7, and the AIJA Annual Congress August 28-September 1. Perry and President-Elect Francis Xavier will attend the VIII St. Petersburg International Legal Forum next month.
Francis will soon be starting his promotional tour for the Singapore conference! Contact Francis or the IPBA Secretariat if you'd like to plan a Singapore 2019 promotional event in your jurisdiction.
