28th IPBA Annual Meeting and Conference in Manila 2018: Special Session!
IPBA Events 2018 • IPBA-Supported Events 2018

Dear [[first_name]] [[last_name]] Esq.,

Greetings from the IPBA!

After a tumultuous 2017 all around the world, we wish we could ensure everyone that 2018 will be calm. Out of curiosity, we researched a few psychic predictions for this year and found some interesting results: UFO sightings and landings; earthquakes; drastic effects of climate change (the Arctic will completely melt within the year); no nuclear war; Beyoncé and Jay-Z will split up; artificial intelligence (AI) will have a larger impact on our everyday lives; and people will be sharing activities on social media more than ever before.

The last two items were foreseen by the IPBA early last year: IPBA Auckland 2017 delegates still talk about the very successful committee session on AI at the conference, and one of the main tasks of the new Ad Hoc Next Generation Committee is to use social media to promote the IPBA among young lawyers.

If only we had been able to see the future when people said to invest in cryptocurrencies . . .

We don't need a psychic to see that it will be another busy year for the IPBA! Planning for meetings and regional conferences is in full swing. Confirmed so far this year are the IPBA Annual Meeting and Conference in Manila, March 14-16; the Mid-Year Council Meeting in Thailand, November 2-5. In the works are seminars and regional conferences in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, and maybe even North America. Dinner at the French Senate in Paris will take place on February 1st, hosted by Anne Durez. A full line up of activities will be compiled and distributed in Manila.

What's happening with tonight's moon is a very unique celestial event, being a Super Blue Blood Moon (an eclipse of the second full moon of the month)! Many years ago, some cultures believed that an eclipse was a sign of bad things to come. Let's change that! Let's turn it around to be a sign that it will be a great year for us all!

IPBA Committee News

The IPBA committees are charging into 2018 fully energized and want to ensure you get the most of your committee by ensuring effective communication with committee leadership and members. In addition to using the IPBA website to identify committee leadership and the online directory to find committee members who might help with your practice, the IPBA makes several other tools available for you.

The Committee Forum feature in the Member Only section of the IPBA web site is a great way to post messages to the entire committee. Log on often to post messages and see replies from other members of the same committee. You can ask the committee chairs/co-chairs to post messages whereby an e-mail is automatically sent out to members of the committee to alert them of a post. Click HERE to learn how to use the feature.

Click the image above to get to the top page of the conference web site. Go to the bottom of the landing page to see this feature.

In addition, the Manila Organizing Committee made it a priority to help committee members get together by building into the agenda specific times and rooms for committee meetings to discuss future events, panels and ways for members to support each other. Also feel free to suggest agenda items to committee leadership for those meetings. In addition, some committees have begun their own email lists for members to exchange updates, information requests, referrals, etc.

Check out the Committee Meetings section at the bottom of the conference web site's top page by clicking on the image above.

The IPBA is always interested in new ways to bring increased value to committees and members. Please e-mail the Secretariat with any ideas you might have to help build even more meaningful communication within the committees!

Thank you!

Corey Norton
Chair, International Trade Committee

IPBA Leadership Activities

Hong Kong, China

IPBA President Denis McNamara kicked off the new year by attending the Opening of the Legal Year in Hong Kong on January 8th. He then proceeded to China where he represented the IPBA at the Global Chinese-Speaking Lawyers' Association in Qianhai, Shenzhen.

This almost wraps up Denis' Presidential duties, as his term ends at the conclusion of the AGM in Manila, when Perry Pe takes over as President. Although Denis laments that Perry is cutting his reign short by one month, it's been a very full and productive 11 months indeed.

The IPBA continues to receive invitations from various legal organizations around the world for the President and/or other Officers or Council members to attend: opening of legal years, annual conferences, and topical summits; or organizations contact the IPBA simply for mutual collaboration. As our reputation grows, the IPBA attracts interest from new associations with which we have not yet established a relationship. Any agreements are entered into after careful vetting by the Officers and Council members. The intent is not to be snobbish about new relationships; rather, the IPBA strives to strengthen relationships already established while at the same time considering collaboration with others if it is appropriate to our goals and philosophy.

Be sure to read Denis' final message to members in the upcoming March 2018 IPBA Journal!
