Dear Members,

Warm greetings to all of you from all of us at the IPBA!

September has certainly been a busy month for the IPBA, with three major regional events held in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, and Seoul. More events are being planned for the coming months, too! Our members are really working hard to bring substantial programs to lawyers and business leaders around the world. All events this month were well attended, which demonstrates the need for such programs due to the rising number of cross-border legal transactions.

If you are interested in holding a program in the name of the IPBA, please contact your jurisdictional or regional leader, or the IPBA Secretariat. The Secretariat is available Monday-Friday, 9:00-6:00 (except Japanese national holidays)

IPBA Membership News

There's still time to take advantage of IPBA's policy whereby anyone who registers from now can enjoy membership through December 31, 2016. That's three full months "extra" membership! Now is a great time to introduce your collegues and business associates to the IPBA. We are tracking referrals, too! Registration can be done online via the IPBA web site New Member Registration page.

IPBA Mid-Year Council Meeting and Regional Conference in Dubai

The IPBA's Dispute Resolution & Arbitration Committee is doing it again: they've organized four panels of experts in international arbitration to discuss "Arbitration at the Crossroads: Middle East, Africa, and Asia".

Hosted by IPBA Regional Coordinator for the Middle East, long-time IPBA member Alec Emmerson, Ali Al Hashimi, and Mohammed Al Suwaidi, the all-day conference features moderators and speakers from Singapore, Egypt, the UK, Korea, UAE, France, Iran, and Hong Kong.

Preceding the Conference, the IPBA Council members will spend 2.5 days to discuss the business of the association, as they do twice a year. They are working for you, our IPBA members!

IPBA Arbitration Day

The first ever KLRCA/IPBA Asia-Pac Arbitration Day was held in Kuala Lumpur on September 14th. Organized by the IPBA's Dispute Resolution and Arbitration Committee, led by Co-Chairs Mohan PIllay and Juliet Blanch, the event saw close to 150 delegates with speakers from Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, the UK, Korea, Germany, and Switzerland. Whew! Read the detailed synopsis through the flyer at right, written by Mohanadass Kanagasabai, IPBA Jurisdictional Council Member for Malaysia.

IPBA Silent Auction Proceeds

At the Annual meeting and Conference in Hong Kong this past May, attendees had the opportunity to bid on items donated by selected IPBA leaders and past leaders. The auction raised approximately US$16,000, which was donated to the Music for Our Young Foundation. Those who attended the conference can't forget the memorable performance by the children at the Gala Dinner.

The cheque was presented to Mr. Gordon Siu, leader of the Music for Our Young Foundation.

IPBA Kuala Lumpur 2016 Early Bird Registration Ends Soon!

Don't miss out on the cheapest registration rate for the 26th Annual Meeting and Conference in Kuala Lumpur! The Early Bird rate expires on October 15th, so there are just two more weeks to save money!

Under the theme of "Diverse Challenges, Global Solutions", the IPBA specialist committees in 23 practice areas are organizing educational programs to be presented over the course of the four-day conference April 13-16, 2016.

IPBA members enjoy the cheapest registration rate, so non-members are encouraged to become members of the IPBA now in order to get the cheapest rate AND take advantage of the extended membership term explained above. Or, non-members can choose the option to get a one-year membership through the regular conference registration rate.

Other news:

  • Only one month left to apply for an IPBA Scholarship to attend the 26th Annual Meeting and Conference in Kuala Lumpur! The program is open to all lawyers 35 years old and under, and laywers from Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and the Pacific Islands. IPBA members and non-members are welcome to apply, so please spread the word to your colleagues and business associates, too!
