Dear Members,

Greetings from the IPBA! It's already been one month since the last issue of Eye on IPBA, and dare we mention that two thirds of the year is already gone? Let's think positively, though: there is still one third of the year left, so we will make the best of it!

There are changes afoot at the IPBA---all for the better, of course! You might have noticed that the header of this newsletter now includes a line indicating IPBA's incorporation status. The Officers are still finalizing some logistics of the incorporated entity in Singapore, but these should be done in the next few weeks. We'll report to you the end result soon!

In the meantime, IPBA members are busy organizing local and regional events! In addition to some smaller local events, there are three major regional events in September:

  • September 10: IPBA-CIC Construction Seminar, Hong Kong
  • September 14: ASIA-PAC Arbitration Day, Kuala Lumpur
  • September 16-17: Asia Forum, Seoul, Korea

And don't forget about our Regional Seminar held in conjunction with the Mid-Year Council Meeting in Dubai this October. Check out the details of each event below.

If you are interested in holding your own event, contact your local IPBA jurisdictionalor regional representative, or the IPBA Secretariat.

IPBA Membership News: Members Wanted!

Did you know that IPBA has a great incentive for new members to join at this time of year?

The IPBA membership term spans January 1st through December 31st of any year. However, members joining from September 1st or later can enjoy membership through December 31st of the following year. That means that they receive up to four extra months of membership benefits for the price of one year!

This offer is exclusive to new members joining us. What a great time to introduce your colleagues and business associates to the IPBA! We are now tracking membership referrals, too! New members can use the IPBA New Member Registration Form, or they can register online. Be sure to let the IPBA Secretariat know if you've made a referral, and we will be sure to follow up!

Now is also a great time to join, in order to take advantage of the cheapest Early Bird registration rate for the IPBA Annual Meeting and Conference in Kuala Lumpur. Those who are not yet members also have the choice to choose a trial membership, valid from January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2016. Check the official conference web site for the latest information.

Either way, it pays to become a member now!

Photos from the Annual Meeting and Conference in Hong Kong have been uploaded to the IPBA web site!

Reminisce about the great times you had, or see what you missed if you weren't there.

See the Media Gallery on the IPBA web site. You can find photos from past conferences in this gallery, too.

October 25 and 26, 2015

A cocktail reception will be held in the evening on October 25th, so come and meet the speakers, IPBA leaders, and other attendees! An updated flyer will be distributed soon.

CCBE President Maria Ślązak and First Vice-President Mr. Michel Benichou, flanked by IPBA Past President Shiro Kuniya (L) and IPBA Secretary-General Miyuki Ishirugo (R).

The IPBA is often approached by other associations to establish a collaborative relationship. Just last week, IPBA Secretary-General Miyuki Ishiguro and IPBA Past President Shiro Kuniya met with the leaders of CCBE, the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe, who were in Japan for meetings with the Japan Federation of Bar Associations.

The CCBE membership consists of bar associations in Europe: 32 full members, 3 associate members, and 10 observer members. The main focus of their activities is on the Rule of Law. In addition to areas of criminal law, the CCBE specialist committees are involved in areas of business law as well.

Although no formal collaborative relationship has been established yet, the four meeting attendees had a good discussion and the IPBA leaders will be considering how best to collaborate with the CCBE.

Other news:

  • If you have any issues you'd like the Council to discuss at the Mid-Year Council Meeting on October 25th, please drop a note to the IPBA Secretariator the Officer in charge of the issue. We welcome any input from all members!
  • Help us find candidates for the IPBA Scholarship Program to attend the Annual Conference in Kuala Lumpur! This is open to all lawyers 35 years of age and under in any jurisdiction, and lawyers in select developing countries. Check the IPBA web site Scholarship page for details and an application form.
