Hello from the IPBA! We hope this edition of Eye on IPBA finds you well.
On the heels of our memorable 25th Anniversary Annual Meeting and Conference in Hong Kong, the IPBA is busy behind the scenes preparing for the next conference in Kuala Lumpur, 19 years after IPBA held its 7th conference there in 1997. Save the dates of April 13-16, 2016! Under the able leadership of IPBA President-Elect Dhinesh Bhaskaran, the host committee is preparing outstanding speakers for the Plenary Session as well as organizing not-to-be-oudone social events, and IPBA committee leaders are now putting together quality sessions in line with the high standards of all IPBA conferences. More details will be posted to the conference web site as they take shape. Be sure to register before October 15th for the cheapest rate!
The printed Membership Directory will be coming your way soon! It will include members between April 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015. You can also find the most current directory online in the Member Only section of the IPBA web site. Log on using your e-mail address, and you can easily reset your password if you've forgotten it! Contact the IPBA Secretariat if you have any trouble.

IPBA Incorporation
As of June 25, 2015, the IPBA is now incorporated in Singapore as a Company Limited by Guarantee.
While it is a big step towards a new future, and some administrative duties of the IPBA Secretariat will change, the Secretariat will continue to operate from Tokyo, Japan, and you as members should see no difference in our services. Most importantly, the IPBA as an association is unwavering it its commitment to retain the Spirit of Katsuura that the founding members intended from the start. This is what sets us apart from other associations, and we are confident that you will all help us in maintaining this philosophy throughout the IPBA's history.

IPBA Scholarship Program 2016
The IPBA Scholarship Committee is now accepting applications to attend the 26th Annual Meeting and Conference in Kuala Lumpur, April 13-16, 2016. In recent years, between six and ten Scholars are selected from different jurisdictions, with travel, accommodation, and conference expenses provided by the generous members contributing to the Japan Fund, and the Host Committee of the 2014 Vancouver Conference.
We welcome applications in two categories:

Young Lawyers (age 35 and under) in any jurisdiction
-
Lawyers in Developing Countries (Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Vietnam, and the Pacific Islands).

Message from the President
|
The 25th IPBA Annual Conference was concluded on 9 May 2015 in Hong Kong. It was an unforgettable experience for me and I hope that the participants of the Conference likewise had a memorable stay in Hong Kong. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in making this Conference a success. We had over 1,100 participants coming from 56 jurisdictions around the world.Dear Colleagues,
On the special occasion of the 25th anniversary of the IPBA, it was an opportune time to reflect on our Vision for the Future, which was also the theme of the Conference. As I shared at the Opening Ceremony of the Conference, Asia is on the cusp of an historic transformation. If it continues to follow its recent trajectory, it is predicted that this region could account for over half of the global GDP by 2050 and it will enjoy widespread affluence, with its per capita income rising six-fold to reach the global average. This potentially promising future has been dubbed the "Asian Century".

Dear IPBA Members,
Hong Kong Conference
The Hong Kong Host Committee and Organising Committee led by our current President, Huen Wong, achieved a very successful Annual Meeting and Conference in Hong Kong from 6 to 9 May 2015, gathering over 1,100 participants from around the world. The Conference theme was ‘Vision for the Future’, which aimed to facilitate reflection on past experiences and an exchange of insights to prepare for future challenges. In line with the concept of the theme, the Conference opened with a suggestive keynote speech by the Honourable Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma, followed by two plenary sessions addressing issues arising from the rapid changes in various legal markets.

The Mid-Year Council Meeting and Regional Conference will be held in Dubai, UAE, this October. On Monday, October 26, 2015, a Regional Conference entitled, "Arbitration at a Crossroads: Middle East, Africa, and Asia". A cocktail reception will be held the evening before.

The "IPBA 1st East Asia Regional Forum: Continued Challenges and Opportunities of Pan Asia" will be held in Seoul, Korea, September 16-17, 2015.

The very first ASIA-PAC ARBITRATION DAY will be held September 14, 2015 in Kuala Lumpur.
