Important Update Regarding the IPBA Annual Meeting and Conference in Kyoto

Inter-Pacific Bar Association
21st Annual Meeting and Conference

April 21-24, 2011 Kyoto/Osaka, Japan

April 11, 2011

Dear IPBA Members and those who have registered for 2011 IPBA Kyoto/Osaka Annual Conference, and those who once registered and withdrew registrations:

On behalf of the IPBA 2011 Host Committee, I would like to update my March 25, 2011 message sent to you.

1. Conditions being Improved at the Fukushima Nuclear Reactors

The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), together with Japanese Government is continuing its efforts to stabilize the conditions of the reactors. The special task forces were dispatched to Japan from the US Government (and US nuclear industry) and French Government (and a French company specializing in nuclear power plant) to assist such effort. The French President Sarkozy visited Japan recently and promised to support the efforts. We very much appreciate such supports from the US and France to improve the conditions of the reactors as well as the supports from other jurisdictions. Although it may take some more time to completely stabilize the reactors, the conditions have been improved.

2. No Problem of Radiation in Osaka/Kyoto

Osaka/Kyoto area has not been affected by the earthquake and there is no problem or danger from radiation.

There is no danger from radiation in Tokyo (please see the article below which compare the levels of radiation in Tokyo with that of Hong Kong. The level in Tokyo is lower than in Hong Kong).

3. Electricity supply, transportation, water, food and business operation in Osaka/Kyoto

Everything is normal in Osaka and Kyoto. Business goes on as usual.

The British Government recently changed its travel advice and no longer advises against non-essential travel to Tokyo (please see the home page of the British Government below).

4. Update of the number of registration and cancellation (as of April 8, 2011)

As of April 8, 2011, the number of registration for the Kyoto/Osaka Conference is 817 from 44 jurisdictions. The number of accompanying person registration is 66. The total of delegate and accompanying person registration is 883.

As of April 8, 2011, we received 225 cancellations of registrations.

We are still receiving new registrations from outside of Japan (and from Japan).

We especially appreciate those who have revived their registrations after cancellation.

We thank you for your supports and the participation of over 800 of delegates and accompanying persons, which encourage us much to see the better future.

We are sure that Kyoto is safe and the conference will be operated as normal and scheduled. We all look forward to seeing you soon in Kyoto and hope those who once cancelled registration to reconsider and register again. Please join us.

Best regards,

Shiro-Kuniya
